Volleyball and Second Stay-over at Weitat's Place

Last Thursday, Weitat hurried us after work and Jingkun drove us to Jurong Entertainment Centre to get MacDonald’s meals. It was my first time sitting inside Jingkun’s new baby and I was actually quite excited.

The tactic used by the fast food restaurant was to give away free glass cup with each upsize of any meal set. We bought the food and quickly rushed back to school. After having dinner, I started nodding and eventually collapsed by the side of the windows.

I woke up a while later with my brain numbed. Without warming up, I stepped into the volleyball court, too weak to do anything. Apart from the exhaustion, the lost touch after missing the game for more than a week paralysed me.

Nothing was good except for the fact that my sprained index finger was recuperating well.

After the game, due to the fact that I decided not to take my bath immediately, I ended up having to face the same old problems myself; and it greatly loaded up my burdens.

I had made arrangements with Weitat to stay overnight at his house earlier on. Along the way, he chatted quite long over the phone with his friend. The journey was longer than usual with my heavy bag.

After bathing at Weitat’s house, we watched the volleyball match between China and Japan, which he had downloaded. After eleven o’clock, we went down to switch on the television in hope of seeing Devin appearing on the show. Weitat cooked noodle for me and followed by a cup of iced tea.

I did not doze off immediately like the previous time, but gave a few tosses around before my usual shagginess conquered me.

The objective of the stay-over was not purely for the convenience of going to work easier in the next morning, but also for the feeling of get-togetherness. Perhaps, we would not get such chance again after September.

Project and Work almost Killed Me

My body almost broke down since last Wednesday. The lack of sleep and exhaustion caused by work weakened my heart so much that I was strengthless throughout.

Yet again, I stayed alone at the office till late without my gang. Eventually, I left before being chased off by the staffs; I did not want to make anyone stay longer just for me in order to lock the door.

I brought work home and struggled in front of my computer, feeling so sick of facing the computer finally. The project took me a ride to frustration in my restless eyes too weary to visualize anything clearly.

Apart from the project, I paid my second visit to my “guardian angel”. Suddenly, I felt so busybody that I should have just fret for my own problems. It was, however, not my practice to watch helplessly when I could offer at least a little.

Jingkun's Chalet at Changi Safra Resort

Last Tuesday, I continued to be drained during work. There was a limit to how I could help others but nothing could be done if one did not wish to help himself.

Right after work, Weitat drove Mingli and I to meet up with Mingfa at Clementi. We enjoyed waffles bought by Mingfa. Weitat had his existing identification card sized photo reprinted, which was a waste of money for the costly price and lousy quality. We wanted to get some rice but none of the stalk owners wanted to sell us.

Next, we proceeded straight to Jingkun’s chalet at Changi Safra Resort. Our initial plan was to play bowling or indulge ourselves in other facilities available. The steamboat set refused to give us warm food and I ended up eating only a fishball, a piece of vegetable and three seventy-percent done prawns peeled by Mingli.

We called for pizza and decided to cancel it for they called us back to inform of that it would require around one and a half hour delivering our order over. Later on, we called back to resume the order.

As Jingkun and his girlfriend left to pick their friends up, the remaining four of us started playing mahjong. It was not long before the pizza delivery man arrived and caught us by surprise. The couple returned with their friends and the mahjong game stopped. I had only two pieces of pizzas to fill my stomach and afterwards, the ice-cream made the night.

Dinner and Shopping at Jurong Point

The first day of work for the week poured exhaustion into me. I repeated the same mistake of wasting time and money to join my gang for dinner at Jurong Point. I had too many unfinished work to handle and the peer pressure was placing me into further suffocation.

Initially we planned to go to Vivocity, which was much nearer to my house but Mingfa seemed to be shagged and thus we quickly changed the plan and alighted from bus 963 to switch to bus 154. It seemed to be a long journey that I started dozing off soon.

This picture does not do the big portion of fish well enough. Better picture next time!

After strolling around and biting of waffles, we met up with Mingfa at the food court where I had one of the largest plates of fish and chips ever. Quantity was its only pro and eating too much of the hard fish was simply tiring; it ridiculously cost six bucks, which the highest price you could ever find in a normal food court.

We continued walking around the shopping centre and Mingfa bought an ankle guard which cost over hundred dollars.

I had a tiring journey home in the train and eventually dozed off before I could do much work.

Great World City, Raffles City, National Library

On the last day of last weekends, I wanted to rush my work but my mum and younger brother wanted to have lunch outside. They had gotten a thirty-dollar voucher for Crystal Jade from Starhub. For the lack of time I had spent with my family, I decided to join them.

We boarded bus 75 and alighted at Great World City. Soon, we found ourselves at the reception of the Crystal Jade Kitchen. After waiting for ten minutes, we were put to sit at the first table near the door. After having a tough time deciding what to eat, the waitress started to point out that the dishes we had chosen were sold out already. For the dim sum menu, almost everything except my mum’s pork leg was crossed out. We did not enjoy the meal for we expected much better quality of food. The bill exceeded twenty bucks more than the free voucher.

After the much disappointing meal, we shopped around the shopping centre. My younger brother decided to take the shutter bus to wherever place it would drop us at. While waiting, we witnessed a pathetic cab driver brushing his car at the back of another cab and started laughing while both of them came out of their cars.

We eventually reached Cityhall and my brother tried to please my mum with the donuts at the Donut Factory. I tried the latest flavour “Chococcino”, which was good and it was not long before my lips were messed up. We proceeded to the National Library where my brother borrowed books using my account and I also grabbed a book on “MySQL”.

It was around evening when we reached home and it was just nice to catch the show “太王四神记”.

Bandit Kings of Ancient China

I spent my entire last Saturday recalling the olden days’ enjoyments.

My neighbour was one of the earliest IT pioneers who started since the Dos command lines days. It was before the release of Windows NT, the Dos game “Bandit Kings of Ancient China” was released. You could easily store the entire game inside a floppy disk of 1.44 megabytes storage, and at that time it was already a huge size, for the secondary storage device, harddisk, could not even hold more than one gigabytes of file.

The game started me off with the liking over strategy games. Having to build up own nation and go for war required more effect than any other type of games, and thus, more satisfying. The availability of saving the game to resume in future meant that the achievements could be kept.

“Bandit Kings of Ancient China” was based on the Chinese Novel “Water Margin” (水浒传 in Chinese). It was one of my favourite stories in the past and I had even bought a series of its books (five books). The story began with the uprising of an evil minister called “Gao Qiu” (direct translated as “tall ball”). In the corruption of the dynasty, many capable men were forced to become bandits, and a hundred and eight heroes eventually gathered at Liangshan Po. Their leader, Song Jiang, caused all their deaths by his determination to receive amnesty from the emperor. Similar to “Romance of the three Kingdoms”, the story of “Water Margin” ended with sorrow.

The game play as taken from Wikipedia: Players start out in a remote prefecture and must expand his base by acquiring additional prefectures, recruit troops and heroes to lead them. The goal is to defeat Gao Qiu by attacking Gao Qiu’s base which cannot take place until emperor’s edict is received. Each turn player has several options. Some of which are Hunt, recruit troops or a hero to lead them, improve the land, and rest. Heroes have loyalty which can be increased by giving them gold. If the loyalty of a hero that you have recruited becomes too low, the hero may betray you. To prevent this, player may swear brotherhood with heroes provided their loyalty is high enough, 95 or higher. Depending on the game level, the number of sworn brothers is limited to 9 (easiest level) or less. Once a hero becomes a brother, loyalty becomes irrelevant and he will never betray you. Brothers/sisters are also extensions of you. Each turn, you may perform one action and likewise, you brothers/sisters can do the same essentially providing you with additional actions per turn. Battles can be resolved automatically or in tactic mode where terrain, a unit’s power, supply, and weather needs to be considered. Tactical battle is very similar to Dynasty Tactics game without the tactics element. There is also a turn limit in the game. It ends if the player is unable to obtain an imperial edict and remove Gao Qiu before 1127 A.D.

Graphics were not their forte for in the past, technology was never as good. However, the designers and programmers were brilliant to come out with this wonderful game.

I had been trying to find this game since as long as before Windows XP was out. I did manage to dig out the game using Nintendo emulator but the graphic totally sucked and navigation was kind of disastrous. Finally, I decided to try using Dos emulator and it worked.

Anyway, I could see the difference between an adult and a small kid’s ways of playing, it was the current me versus the “primary school” me. I started off with building up economics and cultivation for long term plan, whereas during my kiddy days, I spent so many turns hunting for food. The logic was to plan for long term and not just satisfying the current need.

Some people may simply think, “If you don’t have ample time to do your work, why do you still play game?”

I suppose weekends are supposed to be spent enjoying.

I need to relax more.

Bad Week and More to Come

For the past week, Weitat went for reservist and it was quite boring without him, especially when there was no one staying with me when staying back late at work. In the absence of so many people, the usual Thursday’s volleyball game was cancelled.

There were too many worries at work as it required more than efforts. I almost completed a small website which database was involved, but it seemed that I was overdoing my work as probably few people would appreciate. My MSN and email were killers.

My best friend turned hyperactive and bugged me throughout day and night, and the aching placed me on bed when I got home, to doze off early and wake up after midnight. Very often, I had to put my hand at the back to push it forward to reduce the pain.

I was harsh to my throat as well. Being such a lousy owner of my own body, it would not take me long to lose my voice. It could be one of the reasons why I was too lazy to even talk during leisure time.

I missed the volleyball show “球爱大战” on channel 8 for the first three episodes. As a volleyball lover, nobody would probably expect this.

There was no time to continue with my new website, not even to maintain my existing blogs.

The week did not begin well and it would not be any better in near to come.
