College West BNS Farewell BBQ

[Saturday, 27 February, 2010]
Saturday morning, I woke up late. It was not long before I started dozing off again and a dream terrorized me. My elder brother brought many drunk friends home to house them in the middle of the night and I was furious. I woke up with my chest feeling uncomfortable.
I went to see the Chinese physician at around 2.30pm. I was amazed when she told me the details of my tongue was more visible and thus she could see that my stomach’s issue was recovering. She warned me not to take too much of the plum product even though it could help my stomach a lot, because it was too salty.
I went to Zaki’s place at Parc Emily, reaching there at 3.40pm. Nobody else had reached. Zaki vacuumed his place before we went down to set up the barbecue stuffs. I went for a swim with Elvin later but he was not ready for a long swim. I finished seventeen laps inside the very well maintained pool, and had to stop in the next lap due to the heavy meal I took before that.
Joy’s son, Jerome, was my delight of the night. Magdalene managed to heat up his enthusiasm. Weitat could have kidnapped him if only he was confident enough to carry little kids.
I went for a last dip into the pool, completing another two laps with Zaki before ending the party. Carrying the leftover stuffs up to the studio apartment strained myself more. The remaining of them had a few rounds of Wii game. The night ended earlier than I had expected. I was exhausted. I stay behind a little longer than the rest with Zaki and Siti. After that, Zaki sent me home on his way to his friend’s house.
My brothers and my elder brother’s girlfriend wanted to go for supper and I accompanied them without my mum since she had already taken some food. I had my usual two plain roti prata and 100plus to hydrate myself.

Mingfa’s Early Birthday Celebration

Saturday night’s chalet was one of the weirdest ones I had ever attended. I probably should have kept my ears shut earlier since not knowing anything would be a blessing perhaps.

Mingfa came over to pick me up and we wanted to meet up the rest at Tampiness One, however, got stuck at a multi-storey car park nearby. We were trapped inside for more than ten minutes even though we had given up.

It took us quite long to get to Downtown East. It was drizzling and thus we decided to fill our famished bodies before collapsing. The “chicken rice shop” served quite nice food.

The group of us started to enjoy ourselves inside the room by playing poker. I did two sets of push-ups as forfeit, whereas Mingli and Ruoci outshone everyone.

I was a freeloader during the barbecue session and I was not comfortable with it. Boredom almost killed me until we started playing some reaction games.

After Mingfa blew off the candle on his birthday cake, Jingkun sent Weitat and Mingli off. After a while, Mingfa kindly became my chauffer again.

Christmas Eve 2008 – BBQ and Movie

Christmas Eve fell on Wednesday and this time was something different from the usual staying-at-home or hanging-out-with-volleyball-buddies. My family had a barbecue session at East Coast Park in the late afternoon but things did not go smoothly.

I was lazy and it was never my intention to join in the fun if not for my younger brother preferred the family togetherness and that it was a fresh experience. My brothers did the packing of equipments.

The weather was a total disaster. When the dark clouds first sent a warning, we defied proceeded with plan. We boarded bus 196 and alighted at Parkway Parade to shop in the NTUC supermarket to get the food and some other items. It cost me nearly fifty bucks.

Next, we strolled across the underpass and decided on an empty barbecue pit since all the sheds were taken up. I did not feel secure at first and I knew I was right when a group of youngsters came over to tell us they had booked the pit. We quickly evacuated to one of the empty tables.

It started pouring and we set up the tent before moving the lighted tray over to the entrance. My elder brother’s gears were enough to set up a tiny tentage to house the fire and food. I was glad that I did not bring the better ground map along because the current one was pierced at the four corners. We started mocking at the group of youngsters who “snatched” our pit away.

Soon, we realised that we had made a wrong move of setting up our big ground sheet below our tent. The cheap tent was not waterproof and even though it was good enough to block the rain, any contact with the cloth would cause heavy water diffusion. Our pants started to get wet and it was yet another underwear-wet-wet experience.

I was yearning to get home but it was good enough that I was simply enjoying the serving of food with my mum. The amount of food was just nice for the five of us. As the rain got smaller, my mum, elder brother and his girlfriend went to the MacDonald’s and they got back with another ground sheet to put inside the tent and a new pant for me. Then we started to finish the remaining delicious food.

We waited for the rain to stop before packing everything up and walked back to Parkway Parade to catch bus 196.

We started taking shower once we got home. They planned to catch a movie and eventually managed to persuade me to join in. My main hesitation was the problem of taking a cab home after the movie since we had five persons. They proceeded first to Tiong Bahru Plaza to get the tickets while I accompanied my mum over after taking my bathe.

The Yes Man was quite a good movie. It somehow reflected on my life on the number of opportunities I had given up. I said “No” more than “Yes” in my entire life and I had missed out a lot. I did not have a choice anyway.

After the movie, we tried to get cab but none of the drivers was daring enough to house in five of us and thus we decided to walk home.

.

KB BBQ at East Coast Park

I left work a little earlier than the rest to attend my class KB’s barbecue gathering at East Coast Park.

The initial plan was to sleep through bus 196, which would definitely take longer than an hour. Before leaving the office, I was advised to take train and transit to bus instead. The entire information gathering progress killed more of my time and I could have just proceeded to my own plan in the first place.

I walked to Clementi MRT station and stood all the way to Eunos MRT station, almost fell down countless time when I dozed off. It was a torment, and also, a physical and mental test for me, which was unhealthy. After alighting, I made a waste trip to the bus-stop at the main road and finally decided to approach the translink counter. I took bus 13 and luckily, it stopped at the same bus-stop as bus 196. Nevertheless, it was a wrong decision made to not follow my original plan.

Walking towards the sea, I saw to my terror at the number of the nearest pit. A few of the guys were cycling and they called for me. They confirmed to me that the pit was a far distance away. I went straight to the MacDonald’s to get changed into shorts before strolling all the way to find the rest of them. The wind was strong and cooling but I was too shagged to enjoy myself.

It was good to see the kids again, but however, sad to know that so many of them were smokers. I was well served with food and drinks. There was a little playing with camera but the batteries’ lives quite irritated me. Chi Chiang arrived before eight. I got to realise Terrence was staying just opposite me but he left without me. In the end, Chi Chiang was pestering Edmund to exchange magic tricks and I got entertained. We stayed till after ten and left after most of them were gone.

Walking towards Parkway Parade was a good decision but the waiting for bus 196 was long.

Qinxin's Birthday Barbecue at West Coast Park

My girlfriend and I at Clementi

Last Friday, Mingli, Yicheng and I met up with Mingfa after work. We went to the Clementi Recreational Centre and both Mingli and I almost dozed off while watching the two guys playing billiard. We were supposed to play pool after the game but we went over to the bowling alley instead and then, decided to just give it a skip.

After drawing money at the ATM machine near the interchange, we waited very long for bus 175 to send us over to West Coast Park. It was my second lunch at the MacDonald’s even though we only intended to take some snacks at first. We walked over towards the left, facing the sea and reached the boring part of the park.

It was all for Mingfa’s student’s birthday barbecue. Mingfa started the fire together with Yicheng, whereas Mingli started to marinate the chicken wings. I was not helpful since I wanted to take photos and did not want to dirty my hands. Anyway, it was not very well planned with missing items and having Mingli to do the dirty job was obvious enough.

As the hostess’ friends arrived, we were pretty irritated by the guys sitting by the side not doing anything. It was near seven when we took our leave and left them to survive on their own.

I crossed the road to take bus 176 towards Henderson Road, where I crossed the overhead bridge to wait for bus 145. The bus’ engine died off whenever the driver stepped on the accelerator and I heard a couple times of the engine restart while another bus 145 passed by, telling me I should have stayed behind to indulge on the scenery instead; or rather, I regretted not alighting further down the road earlier so that I could climb up to the Henderson Waves instead. Anyway, the bus struggled and survived a few scary moments before the engine stopped the joke.

Chalet With Ex Colleagues

I wanted to go to the chalet earlier to swim but my gang wanted to shop for Chinese New Year clothes. We met up at Queensway Shopping Centre and they were late for half an hour. In the end, none of them bought anything except me, who purchased a pouch at fourteen bucks.

My stomach was bloated again somehow due to indigestive of my late lunch. We went to Ikea near 6pm and took hotdog bun with drinks for a dollar seventy cents. We could have left for the chalet but they wanted to shop there, and I felt bad for not going earlier to help out in whatever I could. I took the chance to rest my stomach while trying out the sofas, chairs and beds and by the end of the trip, I got pretty fine. However, none of them purchased anything again.

We took bus 195 down to Queenstown MRT and after the train ride which I managed to doze off, we transferred to bus 354 from Pasir Ris bus interchange. It was already after nine. Meeting up with the rest of my ex colleagues was extremely nice. The smokers lighted up the cigarettes to keep mosquitoes away for the entire night. The remaining few of them who had still yet to tender were suffering under the disgusting management. All the working till morning three o’clock stories pierced me right at my heart, and the fact was none of them was appreciated. Three of the new staffs were locked in the office on this chilling Saturday night that they could not join us. How evil some bastards could be?

I did not talk much throughout the night. A sudden sadness struck me when some of them began leaving. I felt so lost somehow and I wished I can talk to them more. In the end, my gang left as well. We watched “Mummy” and I dozed off soon after that.

610, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4 – living room and kitchen

3 bedrooms

As the daily routine proceeded, I was lack of sleep once again. I managed to reach Lorong Ah Soo at 12pm and met up with Kelly. We did the final documents for the flat before Kelly sent me over to Ang Mo Kio. We went to block 610 straight before rushing to block 219.

We met up with Jeff and he sounded better in real person than on phone. His client was a very nice and easygoing guy. Throughout the showing of the flat, Kelly out-performed Jeff so much that I was afraid Jeff would be jealous of her. Anyway, Kelly did it on purpose for he was muttering to his client all along.

Kelly and I went to near her place to pass her son money for dinner. Then, we went in the rain to my house where Kelly used the internet to check for client’s enquires. Later, we went down to meet Uncle Sam and David. Things came to a good progress finally.

I went down to Jurong East straight away. Walking there with a total empty stomach seemed to take forever. I managed to find the chalet fast and quickly grabbed some bites at the barbecue pit. It was not as crowded as I expected. It was quite boring at times.

Alvin Cheong and Mrs Ng arrived after 8pm. I was actually quite confused over the invitation of people but it seemed to be a miracle that both of them had turned up. During the first night when I asked the guys if Mrs Ng was coming, they answered that she would be coming on the second day for barbeque; however, a different story of she not coming due to the long journey was said on just hours ago. As for Alvin, I was not sure if all the juniors welcomed him for they did not really know him. I was not sure which seniors were actually invited but at least I did my part to inform Bianhong and Zhirong. I was still feeling so remorseful about the negligence of failure to inform Zhirong about Mr Ng’s death.

Drinkers and drunkards

Volleyball playing was crap with the deflated ball and the irritating corn on the wrist. I was basically sitting alone most of the time and at times, entertaining myself with my phone’s games. I actually felt quite odd out somehow because they were in their groups – the guys with Bianhong and the girls with Junrong. I could have gotten some isolation disease and that explained the rubbish; somehow, I had lost my confidence to communicate. Food was served to me by the guys and especially Bianhong. I had some video taking of Bianhong teaching the junior guys lighting fire on top of the alcohol and bottoming up.

As it started to drizzle, we packed up quickly and went into the house. The junior guys went upside and we got Wileen into the room for great plans. The singing and jeering were fun. I was quite impressed with Junxian’s craps. We tried to play “true or dare” but Pamela and Shujian were not sporting enough. Finally, I realised Shujian would never confess to Wileen no matter what good opportunity we had given them.

We tried to call the rest of the girls up to the air-conditioned room to play together but they were indulging into their own poker game outside when the rain had stopped. Khong Wee got quite pissed off at first but we soon came to an alias to gather outside.

Mrs Ng and Alvin were leaving after eleven and we got together to take a group picture but Bianhong refused to join in. It was never a picture completed then. After that, we gathered around the table to play game in order to finish up the fried rice.

After the long cycling

My pretty and gorgeous princess

It’s all about Huimin

Pig does her work

Fenghui doing work by keeping the bicycles

After the early morning cycling, queuing up for bathing was a problem when there were only two bathrooms for over ten people.

Caught in action – Bianhong and Pamela

Stolen bed

The junior guys were up in their room playing wrestling that caused noises. Huimin and Pamela came into the seniors’ room to squeeze into our queen size bed together with Bianhong and Junrong. All of them except Junrong wanted to chat but ended up dozing off. Bianhong started making lots of noises and even tossed around, and thus I decided to leave the room and slept on the sofas.

Around two hours later, I tried to wake Bianhong up for his work but it was helpless. After some time, I saw a space on the bed and quickly hopped onto it. However, princess came in to ask me out with the rest getting ready to return the bicycles. All of them left soon and I was the only one waiting for Pamela who claimed that her butts were so pain that she could not cycle at all. After mocking at her for Junrong was riding her throughout the trip to East Coast Park that she should be perfectly alright, I asked her to wait Bianhong up to do it in her place. Nevertheless, Bianhong could not be waked up. I tried to cycle with one hand while holding to her bicycle but my skill was not up to it. Alas, I walked down with her but halfway, I decided to cycle over first before walking back to help her push her bicycle.

Upon my second arrival outside the bicycle shop with Pamela, everyone had bought their breakfasts and was ready to leave. I felt they were lacking of a leader who could account for everyone and thus would not neglect anyone. However, it was so sweet that the junior guys waited for both of us to get our breakfasts before returning. I bought “Shui Guo” to share with the “sleeping beauty” Bianhong while Pamela got a piece of small pancake.

After breakfast, most of them were off to bed except for Pamela, Junrong and Bianhong who wanted to catch a movie at Tampiness. They asked me along but the long lonely journey on bus 29 the night before was giving me a phobia. So, I continued my wonder sleep finally on the comfortable bed.

Preparation for the great work

Working?

Washing

Terrorizing the can

Cooking

Luncheon meat

Chicken wings

Afternoon, I woke up to see some of them preparing food. They cooked the plain rice and used it for frying fried rice immediately. The openin
g of the luncheon meat can was a hassle for nobody knew how to use the can opener. Yuting started using the chopper and made a mess out of the can. With similar experiences while helping my mum in the past, I was able to solve their problems.

Khong Wee, Shujian and Huimin were doing most of the work at kitchen and I joined in later to stir the fried rice, giving up my job as photographer. I supposed it was my only advantage that I was stupid to continue stirring the rice even when I was tired. There was lots of rice and the worst thing was that nobody knew how much ingredients to add and Shujian poured in little salt and sour each time; there was even second round of addition of eggs. Basically, I stirred for very long.

After the kitchen was cleared, everyone was like clearing away from it, leaving mess around. I was very disappointed to hear comments like “The cleaning up should be left for others” and “So they just left like that?”. I did not mind washing up everything but the corn on my wrist was at a bad condition already.

Huimin did the washing up of the kitchen and I stayed there to get ready to render any help. In the end, when I carried the wok over to the sink, it appeared that I was fooled to do the finishing job, which was so silly. Scrubbing off the burnt eggs from the wok was difficult and since the knife did not belong to anyone of us, I risked losing its sharpness by using it to scrub the food off. Then, princess’ parents arrived and saw me in my awkward task.

Huimin was the most sporting person who would always pose for pictures

Starting the fire

Spying the Sai family

Still waiting for food

Everyone pushed Shujian to start the fire while he was anxiety waiting for the arrival of Wileen. I knew the importance of taking down memories and therefore I did not want to dirty my hands. They seriously made a mess out of the charcoals but with the aids of solid fuel, it did not matter at all. I was quite worried about the usage of solid fuel for the poison and hence I did not use them despite bringing over to my birthday chalet, but somehow it was the best way to get the fire started.

Arrival of his previous one

The best entertainment was the waiting for Wileen’s arrival. We called out to Shujian for any cab passing by. It was funny to see him appear panic. Perhaps, I was more excited than him as I held the camera to prepare for any action as soon as possible. Upon she stepped out of the cab, I gave a snap but too bad Shujian was moving his head. He did not cherish his chance to behave like a gentleman to offer her drinks. I was not sure about their relationship after so many years but it would really be so devoted of him if he really liked her for so long.

They began playing a card game which required fast reaction and I did not join in for I was holding the camera again and was glad that I managed to record down the ending of the game. I supposed it would be very good memorial for all of them.

[Saturday, 04 November, 2006]

I woke up as early as 7am since Vivi promised to come at that time. However, she came only after eight and took a walk around with her god brother, probably to look at girls.

Later on, they went off for breakfast at Downtown East and most of the sleeping beauties were already up. We waited quite long for Fredrick who camped inside the toilet and decided to stroll off first since he could just come out anytime and catch up with us; but we lost touch with him ever since.

We had breakfast inside MacDonald’s and the ceiling continued to drip water to create a cave-like atmosphere in the urbanised place. Then, Vivi joined us with her god brother and sister. Gilbert, Ivan, Edgar and Ah Boon left for a walk whereas I accompanied the rest of them back to chalet.

We played Daidee for some time until Ivan and the rest came back. Gilbert started decorating the front area and some of them helped out, and sweated so much.

In the afternoon, Ivan wanted to go for cycling whereas I wanted to swim. However, I had problems with deploying of drivers to collect all the barbecue food which kept my phone so busy that I did not go anywhere.

Vivi and Huiying left to swim and this time Vivi was in her bikini; she wore it before but had never removed the outer shirts. The temptation of joining them was huge but I could not just leave everything to fate and wait for someone with car to attend the barbecue early.

My elder brother was there early with his girlfriend, bringing 300 sticks of satays along. Then, they left with my younger brother and mum.

Later on, Sam Toh arrived with his girlfriend and since they were not staying for the barbecue, I could not abandon them and go for a swim. We had great chat and this time Sam was looking more cheerful than ever. Being too cheeky, I punished him with a titbits bath.

Gilbert and the rest returned from their cycle trip and more people arrived. Chua and Gilbert were waiting for me to swim but I could not leave the mess behind. Peace came when Jianhao kindly promised to help me get the fried rice and fishballs from my neighbour (obviously he had not met before) at Tanjong Pagar and Peh offered to get the chicken wings, meat and fried mee hoon from my mum’s friend who stayed nearby.

Finally it was five plus, Chua and Gilbert were still waiting for me for a swim, whereas, Vivi seemed to be among them. However, the barbecue had to begin soon and I could not leave everything to them; it was irresponsible to do that.

Then, Jialing arrived while the rest of the volleyballers were all late; I felt quite bad that I did not know how to entertain her. As more people arrived, I realised I could not go for a swim anymore; I was the host and was supposed to entertain them. I also had to neglect Vivi while entertaining all my friends even though she could just tag along with me wherever I went.

Into later evening, the announcement of the arrival of the cake came about a plot. Vivi led me to the car park area and she claimed that the cake was somehow smashed during the delivery process. She claimed that her friend’s mum had given more curry puffs to compensate for that. The story seemed real and I was too tired to find any amiss until I saw a big rectangular box under the makeup table.

With the lack of sleep for days and walking about to entertain my friends, the anger of friends messaging me so last minute that they were not coming anymore torn down my body.

It was a blessing that I had friends who helped me to barbecue and settle everything that I could be dragged around by Gilbert to take photos with my friends. I did not even have a few bites of my food even though I was having gastric pain since early evening.

It was also the first time I washed crab meat stick and removed the transparent cover for each of them; my brother’s girlfriend helped me for a while as well which surprised me. Then, suddenly my mum was injured by the fallen ice and I realised it was a wrong move to make so many of them. That was the reason why I had to call some nurses to the barbecue.

It took me so much effort to make Tiffany come, which increased the number of times I had to look into my phone and exercised my hands. Hong Kiat’s arrival reminded me that I had forgotten to invite many good friends from his previous camp’s department.

Suddenly, Junrong told me that Zhirong was asking about Mr. Ng and I realised he did not get the news of the funeral, which was so sad. I felt so stupid so that I had failed to inform him about it ever since we stopped keeping contacts.

My sister Jenrice brought along her sweet friend had mesmerized some guys; then they were kind of being irritated by a guy who I got it in the first guess and sadly they had to put up with him for my sake. Anyway, none of my friends believed Jenrice was my sister.

Cake cutting was supposed to be around 10pm as planned by the fun started at around 9pm. Vivi and a few others (I could not remember) were asking me to start it early as quite a number of people had to leave already. I did not print out the guest list and did not realise so many of my volleyball friends were still on their ways.

So, we started taking photos and I was already so worn off that I did not know who had hidden from taking photos with me. Then, my mum, said to be drunk, pushed Vivi and I together and we had to take a kissing photo for them.

They realised I was hungry and wanted me to have the first bite of the cake. So, Mingfa hid a candle into a portion of the cake and I was supposed to remove it without using hands. Although I was well prepared with my palms holding the table tight, I could not resist Tze Khit’s power.

There was a little cake war between all the guests and me. I could have bathed them nicely if my leg was perfectly alright but I still managed to hug some of them to thank them for coming.

As I was turn into breaking down with the exhaustion, Chua’s sudden recommendation to go into the water caught me unaware. Even though I was so small size, I managed to give some resistance except that my left leg was restricting me from r
efusing their kindness.

They removed my spectacle and mobile phone from my pockets but not my big red packet.

More warm hearted hugs were offered to the guests after that for my first bath of the day as they left groups by groups.

I was supposed to house some of them but they saw that the chalet was packed and they did not want to squeeze together in case anyone would fart with the higher possibility.

Ou Xiang and Kaelyn aka Pauline came quite late and I could not persuade them to stay; apparently Kaelyn was sweet that she rushed over after work at around 9.30pm.

There were so much food left over but it was better than having shortage of food; at least this was the first time I organised a party by myself and with some very good advisors.
