Computer Genius – Acts Smart

It was the joke of the day when I saw people asking about why “ALT” + “Printscreen” did not work for Windows 7 in Facebook. Someone had already answered it was purely because laptop required the “Fn” Function, and yet, an act-smart person replied saying:

“window 7 is different already… U have to click fn only can copy and paste..”

Does this mean that a person using laptop needs not use the “Fn” key if he is running on Windows XP or Vista operating system?

Computers are designed to separate hardware and software’s development, so that you can easily upgrade either of them without affecting the other, or at least, there will not be a major like a specific key on the keyboard requires additional help to function. That is also the way OSI model is divided into seven layers.

MSN Windows Live Messenger Multiple Webcam Removed

Please join Facebook Page We want the Webcam feature back in latest version of MSN and invite all your friends if you want the Webcam feature to be back.

It has been more than a fortnight since I wrote the article on No More Multiple Webcam Chatting in MSN and I have been receiving a lot of traffics from web queries regarding it. It reminds me time is dashing fast as more MSN Windows Live Messenger users are going to download and install the latest version of the chat messenger (currently Version 2009 Build 14.0.8117.416) and start wondering the lost feature.

Below is a list of searched queries over search engines such as Google:

wlm no webcam without sound

Yes, for those of you who are still figuring out how to do the multiple MSN webcam, you can jolly well forget about it for now because the team of MSN Windows Live Messenger is going to drop it in its feature list in future, and this is what many users and I mean as “downgrade of Windows Live Messenger”. Therefore, please stop searching for the “Show my webcam” or “View my webcam” button.

At least for now and future, you still get to do webcam with your contact using the Video Chat feature.

To summarise the difference between Webcam and Video Chat:

Features / Highlights Webcam Video Chat
Multiple windows Yes. You can do webcam chat with a large number of friends at the same time. You can also view as many webcam as you like without having your own webcam. Both subjected to bandwidth though. No. You can only chat with a party at a time.
Cross usage of Webcam and Video Chat No. Once you are using Webcam, you may have multiple webcam windows but you cannot use Video Chat. No. Once you are in Video Chat mode, you cannot even view other people’s webcam.
Sound No. There is no sound streaming, which means you and the other party cannot hear each other’s voice. Yes. There is sound streaming and both you and your friend can simply chat without using the keyboard. Both of you can also mute any party’s sound.
Video Quality Reasonable, depending on both party’s internet bandwidth. Better than Webcam chat usually. Larger amount of frames are streamed and thus it is more realistic.
Bandwidth Webcam chat requires less bandwidth. It is more usable when one of the parties has low bandwidth. Video Chat requires much larger bandwidth for the better video quality and inclusive of the sound streaming. However, if either party has a low bandwidth, it may result in disconnection.

MSN Windows Live Messenger team is removing the Webcam feature in their development as to concentrate on the Video Chat feature. This will greatly affect more MSN webcam chat users and soon, more users will be spending hours trying to figure if their chat software is corrupted or their windows are invaded by virus. As they start googling for the problem, it will take some time for them to figure out about the new development of the MSN team after viewing all the pages about how McAfee Antivirus software has conflicts with the messenger. This is a true experience of mine, and now I’m still feeling so silly about the hours of time I have wasted.

Seriously, the MSN Windows Live Messenger team needs to develop the Video Chat feature such that the MSN software allows multiple webcam chat windows as to please many users; otherwise, it is totally a wrong move to remove the Webcam feature.

Housekeeping Days – Windows 7

On Monday, the first day of my off days, I started packing my cupboard. Since my elder brother had gone to Malaysia for holidays with his colleagues and girlfriend, I was able to squeeze some spaces to open the cupboard and unload the stuffs.

I looked through the old lecture notes from my poly days and realised I had actually studied many things, which I had totally forgotten and not having a slight impression of them. Since the notes from UOW was all printed from softcopy, I threw them abandoned the hardcopies as well.

Due to my back problem, it took me long time to do my work with the intervals of rest. I even dozed off for long hours in the late afternoon and woke up feeling more tired than ever. Eventually, I finished three quarters of the packing and had to give up.

Day two was another busy day. I started configuring my younger brother’s laptop. It was my virgin try on Windows 7. Installing the software and transferring the remaining of the files on the office’s laptop lasted me for many hours.

My new baby was running on Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, T9400 at 2.53GHz with 4GB of memory. It was the lightest model since a year ago for 17’ inches laptops.

There were, however, many disadvantages. The graphic card could not even support Counterstrike Condition Zero well, let alone L4D which I was reluctant to try. The screen was dim and the sound was obviously not fantastic. I could feel the heat even after placing it on top of the fanning system. It had only three USB ports and all of them were at the right side. My brother had also warned me that the battery life could barely last over three hours.

At least, it was better than my office’s office in terms of RAM and weight (especially). The faulty HP laptop with auto adjustment of volume, refusing “alt” + “tab”, was more than a nuisance to work with. The BIOs problems forcing the draining of battery even when the system was off, killed my entire good impression for HP laptops.

Windows 7 was half an alien to me but I could see the great improvements. I was able to drag the folder upwards to the edge and it would maximum the window other than having to double click the window. The taskbar was neatly organised with all the similar items grouped together, displaying using rectangular icons instead of long bars; on mouse over, each individual icon would pop out nicely. The “quick launch” buttons were merged into the taskbar as well and I soon got used to it. For all the special folders such as “my document” and “my music”, I could see that they were classified under “library”, such that different folders could be added inside, but of course there was a default folder to be assigned.

I had problem with the installation of Photoshop CS3 due to the AVG antivirus. Following was the installation of PHP, which required the web server – either IIS or Apache. I was not confident at all since PHP did not seem to work well with Windows Vista. The other essential software are Microsoft Office 2007, MSN Live Messenger, Notepad++, Flash Renamer etc. I also set up the games.

In no time, I would be ready to strive all the way for my websites without worrying for the transferring and backing up of data files.

Reinstall Windows

I reformatted my operating system around twelve hours ago after more than one and a half year. The old Windows was far too slow and did my system wrong. It did not help no matter how many registry cleaners and anti-spywares software I tried since windows systems were designed this way.

I left the computer running while I went to sleep and when I woke up at eight AM, starting to configure everything before realising I had two operating systems. Immediately, I realised what had gone wrong and had to reinstall the windows again, but I made sure I did a clear reformat before that. I went back to sleep but it was not easy even though I was very lack of the rest. Many weird dreams accompanied me throughout the two hours of nap.

The new operating system looked cool with many preinstalled software even though I was quite afraid that they might slow the system down; but everything seemed to work well.

The only problem I faced was the MSN Live version 2009, which I had tried a few days ago could not work after the reformatting. Everytime after I logged in, it would display error and if I were to close that window, MSN would log me off.

After surfing around, I realised there were some bugs with this beta version of MSN. There was no luck with solving despite downloading some updates stated in forums. When I tried to switch back to MSN 8.5, I realised the groups that I had set were messed up, probably because the latest version had its own “favourite” and “group” categories.

The most tedious software to install were PHP, SQL and Textpad and that was the main issue I did not want to reformat the system since half a year ago.

Reinstallation of Mozilla Firefox was not so bad with the use of the add-ons, FEBE and Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer, and things were back to usual.

Windows Media Player 11 and Windows XP

Windows Media Player 11 was released a few days ago or even earlier.

Out of nowhere, your windows might prompt you to upgrade, which you might happily click the agree button. However, for Windows XP users, please be caution that you have to validate your windows version before you can start using it.

For those who do not wish to validate your windows, you can of course do a rollback by choosing the earlier date of the System Restore, which is before the installation of Media Player 11. The path to the “System Restore” is…

All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Please be caution that the system changes made after the date you choose to restore to will be reset.

Graphic Card and Screen Resolution

[Monday, 09 October, 2006]

There was a single black line across near the top of my screen. I tried to switch windows and later off and on the power of the monitor but every way seemed pointless.

A few days ago, there were a couple of times when the whole screen turned black for a second. I suspected my graphic card was having problems.

This time, I told my elder brother who asked me to change the resolution of my screen from “1280 x 1064” to “1152 x 864” pixels and the black line disappeared.

He told me he did not even use such big resolution even though his graphic card was better after he realised the performance would be less efficient. As for my old computer, the graphic card was much lousier and therefore could not take it.

A lesson was learnt.

MSN down

For those who fail to sign into MSN Live, you might want to try these but I cannot guarantee if it would work. Do it at your own risk.

1. Open the file – C:WindowsSystem32Driversetchosts
2. Append these 2 lines to the bottom:
65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.com
65.54.239.80 dp.msnmessenger.akadns.net
3. Save and close the file

Note: Make sure you do not change the file format, not even to “.txt”.

Anyway, I have come across this article saying “MSN Chat will no longer be offered on or after October 18th” from http://news.softpedia.com/news/Microsoft-Shuts-Down-MSN-Chat-34560.shtml. Seriously I would prefer the older versions of the MSN since MSN Live seems to take up more system resource.

Song display

I am so sick of friends asking me to send him/her the song that I am playing in my Windows Media Player. Chuanjie often teases me that I never switch off my computer but I have already mended my way – I used to leave the computer on during weekdays too.

They know it by looking at my MSN personal message. It is okay with the teasing but really troublesome for the sending of songs. I have so few songs in computer anyway and it is so weird that I have so many to their likings.

So, I am switching off the MSN plug-in in my Windows Media Player, so that the songs I am listening to will not appear anywhere for others to see; for the time being that is.

My MSN

MSN 7.5 is out since don’t-know-when. I didn’t try the actual one since there’s a patch file. The obvious new feature is the voice clip, which I haven’t tried since the back of this CPU is unreachable to insert microphone. It doesn’t sound interesting after all. At least for new, my auto idle away is fixed and nobody would be mistaken when I’m away.

I logged into my old MSN account ( sillydumb[remove-this]@hotmail.com ), amazed to find out not everyone had deleted me yet; even some were already inside my new account ( sillydumb[remove-this]@gmail.com ).

I didn’t add everyone back, but leave them a choice to add me into my new account. I sent emails and posted Friendster bulletin to inform them. I was weird, because most of them didn’t talk to me and I didn’t know if they wanted to, or they had already abandoned their accounts.

There was a sudden feel of innocent and naiveness to see some of the familiar nicknames and email addresses. I wasn’t dwelling into the past, just happened to enjoy the sweet memories.

Life used to be better. That was when everyone was more innocent. With less responsibility, everyone seemed more cheerful. Even though people used to bombard me with questions endlessly, it was much better than now.

Life used to be good.
