Singapore Flyer, Popeye and Early Birthday Surprise

My Saturday was spent more sloppily than the previous week. The lack of sleep from the night cycling put me on the mattress every now and then since I did not get a straight comfort rest somehow.

I did try to make the best out of the day with my website. Meanwhile, I was pinning for the arrival of 7.30 PM for one of my favourite shows – 鹿鼎记. I actually dozed off and missed half an hour of it; the worst thing was that I did not manage to get my favourite fish and chips at the Amara hotel’s food court.

Mingfa called me in the midst of my show and I was quite delighted when they suggested going out for dinner. The final call from them cost the last few minutes of the show but I actually spent the time waiting at my void deck for them. Mingfa and Weitat came over to fetch me and together we went to the Singapore Flyer. We met up with Jingkun and Mingli who got there earlier and we bought the tickets.

The scenery was okay but the night’s darkness made photography difficult. I supposed every visitor had to choose between visibility and photography.

Anyway, the four of them were too excited and thus most of the shots were on them. The sudden decision to spend the thirty bucks saw disaster to my hair. It was my first ever ride on a ferries wheel. It was great to have the whole cabin to ourselves.

After the short-lived enjoyment, we finally got to chew on the chicken in the Popeye fast food restaurant. I was so hungry that I started peeling out the flesh immediately and almost burnt my fingers. It was delicious.

After the late dinner, they were discussing over the next destination. Mingli took Jingkun’s car again. I felt weird that they wanted to go to the Henderson Waves but the tiredness and excitements eased my suspicious.

We went to the petrol station before going up the Telok Blangah hill. When we stopped at the carpark, I was asking them if we needed to wait for Jingkun and Mingli but I did not get any answer before we started making our way up to the bridge. We took some stroll around before Jingkun came over and told us that Mingli was having menstruate and was sitting down at the end of the bridge. Suddenly, Jingkun gave me a plastic knife and I finally realised what was going on.

Mingli failed to light the last candle before our arrival. They started singing birthday song and I could feel their efforts. There was a little photo taking session before we ended the night and I had to bring the entire cake home since they were all full already.

Cycling in the Rain – Underwear Wet Wet

I caught a little nap after taking my flu syrup. It was quite a nervous preparation since I did not know the exact arrangement of the night cycling trip. Bus 196 took ages to arrive and I was cursing SBS for the indication of “13 minutes” waiting time on the board at the bus-stop.

A well dressed up collar shirt man boarded the bus and sat beside me at Lao Pa sat and I felt like kicking him for his body smelt of liquor and that he added as if his body was huge. My initiate plan to rest in the journey failed all because of him moving about and having his long sleeve shirt slicing my skin on the arm.

Anyway, I was surprised to reach the destination on time despite all the factors that stalled my time. I was so shocked that nobody else was at the meeting point, carpark C4, except for many unfamiliar faces. Luckily, some of them were wearing the school’s shirts. I took a walk further down to make sure I was at the correct location and twenty minutes later, I returned to see a few familiar faces.

Weiming arrived before Faris and I realised there were only three of us. The kids were divided into four groups and appointed leaders did most of the controlling.

At the beginning of the trip

Since there got to be two persons on the vehicle and that I did not have a civilian driving license, Faris and Weiming had to be the drivers. I was left alone to cycle by myself. I could have joined the groups randomly to have a clearer picture of the entire situation or tease them around, but since Faris placed the responsibility of being the sweeper at the most back to ensure that we would not lose anyone by the end of the event, I was all by myself.

The stoppages since beginning of the trip caused yawning. The thing I hated most was the “yaya papaya” attitude from some of them who were from another department – banking. I regretted joining in the trip when I could have used the time to work on my websites instead, or at least, surf net at home.

Alex joined us when we reached the runway and we actually sped up a bit on the long stretch of path. Our pace was in fact still quite slow that I could not feel any stress on the legs’ muscle. When we reached Changi Village, everyone simply dumped their bicycles by the side of the hawker centre and I volunteered to stay behind to look after everything.

More than an hour later, we decided to move on further to the Old Changi Hospital but at the start of the expedition, there were too many casualties that we had to halt the plan. The cramping of legs and the breaking of a bicycle chain caused the problems. Worst still, there was a girl who fell more than five times throughout the trip and luckily there was a small personal bicycle in exchange for her rented one. It took us some time to clear up the mess and begin on the journey back. This time round, since the small lorry was already occupied with the casualties, Faris and Weiming took a bicycle each while Alex became the chauffeur.

The entire trip would not be so memorable without the rain which started to hit us at the Changi Beach. We had to put on poncho before reaching the runway as the rain started to pierce through the air. Alex did a good job by distributing them at a road junction and I was impressed by his responsibility.

The pace on the return trip seemed to be much faster. Visibility was a great issue to me for my spectacle was almost wet by the huge rain. As my shoes started to get wet, I felt so irritated and it reminded me of the army days. In the mid of the runway, Jiaquan stopped due to stress probably from cycling in the huge rain. His body was weak and thus we had to accompany him. We contacted Alex and pushed our bicycles to the nearest small shelter, the last of the third shelter along the path.

The thin plastic poncho could not help much to resist the coldness and my Ripcurl singlet was probably a wrong choice of top to wear in the weather. We realised the rain would not stop and thus we continued after some time and to begin on the journey in our almost frozen bodies made it seem like it was impossible to carry on. The entire bicycle was shaking because my body was shivering in the numbness, too cold to talk. If only we did not pause at all, our body could have provided enough heat to resist part of the coldness.

At the end of the runway, we chose to move on the road since it could be faster and Alex drove the lorry with hassle light on behind us to ensure our safety until we reached East Coast Park again.

The stress level was definitely high under the never-seem-to-stop rain. However, it was probably the only chance to challenge our limits together. That was probably the best gift of the entire trip. I was certain that others would be envious of my struggle together with both Weiming and Faris because we could probably not find many better men than them in this world.

As we reached the destination, we were glad to see everyone back in a piece. We started to return the bicycles to the exact spot and everyone was too anxious to leave, such that in the end we were the only ones keeping account of the bicycles.

Faris first sent Azyan back to Bedok North and then the rest of the guys to Bukit Panjang. I realised I could have gotten home much earlier if I were to take bus 196 in my wet shoes but it was good to accompany Faris who did not catch a wink as well and had to drive. He was yawning and trying to keep himself awake, but insisted to send the kids back home even though he was in a rush to return the lorry. In the end, he dropped me at Jurong East MRT before making a turn back to the school.

It could be a much better trip if the convoy was smaller or having a bigger lorry and that more adults were present to control the problematic kids, especially from the banking side.

Night Cycling Soon

I had a two-hour nap but not a continuous one as my younger brother tried to trample on the mattress in the middle.

Cough syrup really tastes disgusting. I have to take it again since there is still infection which is causing a little breathing difficulty whenever I try to breathe in hard.

I’m not very sure of my feeling now since I know it will going to be fun later but my health status is low. What makes things worse is that my mum is leaving Singapore tomorrow morning before I can get home, and there will be problem with my meals again.

Luckily, she will be back on Sunday night.

Faris’ Farewell Party

I had a very tough morning, but at least it was the last time for this year to go down all the way to Bukit Batok.

Me, Faris, Alamelu, Joy Koh

In the afternoon, the kids organised a farewell party for Faris. The photo on the cake impressed me. We waited quite long for Joy to join us. The humorous speeches from Faris were really motivating but sad. I could have left before him and I did not expect him to reach the finishing line earlier.

Leaving during the mid of the term was probably good since there would be chance of a gathering, unlike during the holidays.

Badminton was therefore being delayed for nearly an hour. By the time I reached the hall, they were already having fun. Alan joined in and we played together with Weiming, Bernard and Daniel with some rotating of players, and Jingkun joined us in the last round. In the end, I played single with Alan before ending the day.

I did not doze off upon reaching home like any other week day.

Special Lunch and Faris’ Briefing

I had lunch with Faris, Cheng Hong and Weiming together yesterday. It was the first time I dined with them together after almost a year. I felt weird to put on seat belt at the back of Faris’ car but since Cheng Hong did it, I assumed it was polite.

Anyway, we went to Jurong East and I only knew it was somewhere near Mingli’s house. I had a plate of chicken fried rice from the Muslim stall and it was quite good. All along, Faris talked a lot and his stories were very interesting. Weiming chatted with him more inside the car and when we were eating, Cheng Hong had more experiences to share.

I kept quiet most of the time since I had to gobble up my hot food in order to rush back for briefing. Nevertheless, I was in an outer space when their conversations involved with some names in the market.

We were late for the night cycling briefing but luckily someone had opened the theatre to house all the early birds. Faris gave super interesting talks and I was very impressed with his jokes to entertain the kids who were getting impatient due to time delay.

Volleyball Session Turned Nothing

It had been more than a week since there was no volleyball and a sudden message from Mingfa to update about Monday’s game gave excitements even though I was still down with cough and flu, and the blisters on my fingers were giving pain.

I was caught in the late afternoon by Roy and his gang who wanted me to open up a lab for them to do project right after Weitat left. Since they told me it would take only an hour, I agreed. I brought my paper work down and accompanied them.

An hour passed by and I did not bring my laptop down to at least continue with my website design since I thought it would be over soon. They were too hardworking and did not give up even after the office was closed. If I knew it would be so long, I would not have minded bringing the laptop home.

I did tell myself many times not to get involved in other people’s business since I needed the time to concentrate on my own work. There was no time to waste anymore and I would not want to let my dreams fade away like others…

The boredom almost killed me.

Four hours later since five PM, we finally packed up. I went down to the hall to bide my team-mates goodbye before leaving since I did not want to get changed into my volleyball gears for just less than an hour.

The fortunate thing was that Roy stayed at Redhill and I got companion for more than half of the journey home.

Best Email Ever

Receiving appreciation is one of the greatest joys one can ever enjoy after a period of tough time with countless effort spent.

There are many different ways to show your appreciation for someone and just a simple “thank you” would cause a big impact.

In my twenty-four years of struggle, my effort for the past few months is one of the proudest things I have done.

Indeed, it is the best email I have ever received.

Long Weekend – Deepavali

I spent the long weekend better than previous weeks; more things were done although the efficiency level was still too low. I did not even know about the Deepavali’s holiday until Daniel told me on last Friday morning.
I managed to update two blogs:
Chinese Dramas
Hey! Are You Joking?
My upcoming directory site had moved to another era with the confirmation of the design and layout, such that I could go ahead with the remaining coding without fears of amendments.
I added four Chinese songs to my collection:
吴英仔 – 双手的温柔
(Wu Ying Zai – Shuang Shou De Wen Rou)
吴宗宪 – 留心
(Jacky Wu Zong Xian – Liu Xin)
李玖哲 – 想太多
(Li Jiu Zhe – Xiang Tai Duo)
薛之谦 – 黄色枫叶
(Xue Zhi Qian – Huang Se Feng Ye)
The meet-up with Irwin, including golfing, was great except for the fact that my flu and cough had not recovered.
I also managed to spend some time trying out the add-ons for Mozilla Firefox to enhance my surfing experience.
If only the weekend was longer…

No Sweat, No Ache, Zero Metre

Irwin returned to Singapore yesterday morning. He messaged me in MSN at around nine PM to ask me to go for golfing. I was itchy for it as well, especially for the late night experience, I agreed instantly. He reached my place twenty minutes in his brother’s car and we sped off to the Queenstown shooting range.

We managed to reach before ten PM but the auntie told us that even though the range centre would be opened until eleven PM, the shop was closing at ten and without the clubs, we had to give up. We decided to go home straight away and turn up early at seven AM to “knock” on the shop’s door.

I did manage to wake up at six AM but was too sleepy to clear my mind before I started dozing off for another hour. Irwin messaged me just in time and I quickly got up and started preparing. We met up at eight AM and it was really fortunate that Irwin could get his brother’s car again such that it greatly reduced my travelling time and waste of strength.

It was my third golfing session and we went to the second level again. The weather was fine at first but it got a little warm for some time before it drizzled for a few minutes. Everything was fine except for the number of smokers who were dying to get lung cancer.

Blisters!

There was not much improvement for me since I still could not withhold my own bullish strength and greed to slam the golf club towards the ball, such that I could not get a perfect hit. Nevertheless, the continuous reflections through the entire game did save my hands from having muscle ache. It was the first time I left the shooting range without internal pain, but also the first time I suffered from blisters; three burst and two recovered.

We played a total of around six hundred balls before I gave up and Irwin got himself another fifty plus and finished them in no time. It was a great relaxing morning.

We went for brunch at Vivocity and I finally got to enjoy Long John Silver’s combo one again. Irwin got himself some name card papers and ink cartridges before sending me home.

Golf would probably resume after his return from Korea next Friday.
